HPP wins permission for a new discount supermarket for Stroud

11 September 2017 | Ridge News

Following lengthy negotiations and on-going discussions, planning permission has been granted for the development of a new discount supermarket, together with up to 50 new homes and a food outlet at Daniels Industrial Estate, Stroud.

The approved scheme, which involves the demolition of the existing buildings, will appropriately redevelop an ageing and underused site, which has been in decline for some time and how now reached the end of its useful life. A detailed heritage assessment, which was undertaken for the site and accompanied the application, indicates that there is little heritage value at the former industrial estate.

The approved scheme provides a high quality, contemporary retail development in a sustainable location, on a brownfield site, which will regenerate the immediate area, providing new employment opportunities and much needed new homes for Stroud. In terms of the retail element of the scheme, the Retail Impact Statement, which accompanied the application, demonstrates that the approved scheme represented an effective regeneration mechanism to meet a local need. It will improve choice and competition and claw back trade that is currently lost from the area to alternative destinations, promoting more sustainable patterns of shopping.

The residential aspects of this scheme, which will incorporate affordable housing, will complement the employment generation uses also approved.

HPP are delighted to have led this project, which demonstrates that the proposed redevelopment of the site, with housing to the west and the supermarket and food outlet to the south and east, will have an enhanced impact on the area due to the replacement of tired underused buildings with intended high quality buildings which will incorporate excellent detailing and design with substantial landscaping.

It is considered that the scheme represents a sign of confidence in Stroud and will be placed to act as a catalyst to further investment within the town.
