21 June 2017 | Planning Policy Updates

On 21st June, the Queen formally opened Parliament. It was evident that Brexit would dominate Government agenda however of relevance to planning matters, the government has now committed to the following;
· Progressing industrial strategy
· Bringing forward legislation for the second phase of HS2
· Supporting electric car technologies

The Queens Speech also confirmed that the Government would conduct a public inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire. Commentators report that the inquiry may well raise wider systemic issues that have implications for planning; place making, achieving higher density residential development and providing affordable housing. Indeed the aftermath of the Grenfell blaze has highlighted a shortage of genuinely affordable housing so severe that the capital’s ability to accommodation the victims of the tragedy seemed in doubt for a number of days. The Prime Minister has responded by saying;

‘for too long in this country, under governments of both colours, we simply haven’t given enough attention to social housing’.
